Expressions of Masculinity in the Caribbean

From the outset, our guests, Deandrew Moore and Akkeem Polack, share compelling perspectives.

Deandrew emphasizes the traditional roles of men as providers and protectors deeply ingrained in Caribbean societal expectations.

However, Akkeem brings a refreshing view, highlighting the evolving landscape where women are increasingly recognized for their protective capabilities.

The conversation deepens as we delve into the dynamics of gender roles. We challenge longstanding norms, such as men being sole financial providers in relationships, in favour of more equitable models. This shift reflects broader societal changes influenced by global interactions and modernization.

Colonial Legacy and Its Influence

Colonialism casts a long shadow over Caribbean masculinity, introducing patriarchal structures that persist today. The legacy of colonial ideologies, including the perception of lighter skin as superior, continues to shape societal norms and beauty standards, evidenced even in practices like skin bleaching.

Adaptation in a Changing Caribbean

Living outside the Caribbean offers a unique perspective on masculinity. It allows men to explore diverse definitions of masculinity, free from the constraints of traditional or hypermasculine ideals. This exposure fosters a journey towards authenticity and self-definition.

Media's Role in Redefining Masculinity

In today's media-saturated world, representations of masculinity are evolving. Our discussion touches upon the transformative power of media in challenging stereotypes and promoting more inclusive narratives of masculinity.
