From Biochemistry to Teaching

Kevin's journey began with a degree in Biochemistry, coupled with a minor in Economics. Despite lacking specific career guidance, his passion for science from 5th form led him down this path.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Kevin decided to pursue an MPhil program. However, he found the program to be boring and monotonous. As a result, he transitioned to assisting with lab demonstrations for first-year university students.

It was during a break in December when he confided in his supervisor about his interest in teaching. Consequently, he applied for teaching positions and began his career as a teacher the following January.

After Kevin started his teaching career in January, he continued in that role and found that he truly enjoyed it. By September of the same year, he was convinced that teaching was his passion. He decided to pursue further training by enrolling in a postgraduate training program. From there, he progressed in his teaching career, accumulating seven to eight years of experience in the field.

Finding Jobs

During his job search for teaching positions, Kevin considered the location of the schools he applied to. He applied to schools in different areas, such as St. Catherine.

However, the specific location did not play a significant role in his decision-making process. Kevin's main focus was on applying to schools that were within a reasonable distance from his place of residence for commuting convenience.

Like most recent graduates (like yourself one day) Kevin truthfully states he was more concerned with securing a teaching position than being picky about the location.

He applied to several schools and received interview offers from schools in both Kingston and St. Catherine. In the end, he accepted a teaching position in St. Catherine.

Navigating His New Career

Kevin was unsure about the requirements and expectations of being a teacher initially. He stated that he joined the profession without a clear understanding of its demands, making it difficult to adjust to his new role.

Reflecting on his experience, Kevin highlights the importance of exploring various options and being open to unexpected opportunities. His transition from university to teaching wasn't planned but stemmed from a genuine interest in science education.

Kevin's decision to teach in the UK stemmed from a blend of personal ambitions and a desire to inspire his students. He expressed a longing to explore the vastness of the world, a sentiment he often shared with his students, emphasizing the world's immense potential.

Teaching Abroad

For Kevin, teaching abroad wasn't just about the job—it was about embarking on a grand adventure. He relished the chance to see the world, immerse himself in new cultures, and broaden his horizons beyond what he'd ever imagined possible.

One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching abroad, according to Kevin, was the opportunity to inspire his students back home. By chasing his dreams and stepping out of his comfort zone, he hoped to show them that anything is achievable with a dash of courage and a sprinkle of determination.

Teaching in a new country wasn't just about teaching—it was about personal growth and professional development. Kevin saw the UK's dynamic education system as a springboard for his career, offering him opportunities to learn new skills, advance his career, and become the best educator he could be.

However, let's face it—relocating abroad isn't cheap. Kevin had to dig deep into his pockets to cover expenses like visa fees, airfare, and initial living costs. But for him, the investment was worth every penny for the priceless experiences that lay ahead.

Moving to a new country meant navigating unfamiliar customs, language quirks, and social norms. It wasn't always smooth sailing for Kevin, who found himself grappling with the occasional bout of culture shock. But with each challenge came a valuable lesson in adaptability and resilience.

Despite his impressive qualifications and teaching experience, Kevin hit a few roadblocks when it came to credential recognition in the UK. It was a frustrating setback, but Kevin refused to let it dampen his spirits. He saw it as just another hurdle to overcome on his path to success.

Teaching abroad also meant leaving behind the familiar comforts of home and starting fresh in a new environment. It wasn't always easy for Kevin, who had to rebuild his career from the ground up. But with each new opportunity that came his way, he embraced the chance to grow and thrive in his adopted home.

Follow Your Dreams

Kevin's journey began with a simple belief: follow your dreams. He encouraged aspiring teachers to embrace their aspirations despite any doubts or discouragement from others.

For Kevin, teaching wasn't just a job—it was a calling, a chance to make a meaningful impact on students' lives. He emphasized that individuals should take ownership of their career paths, recognizing that it's their life to shape as they see fit.

Maximize Your Science Degree

Reflecting on his own background in science, Kevin highlighted the versatility of a science degree. He shared how his passion for science led him to pursue a degree in biochemistry, a decision that ultimately opened doors to diverse career opportunities.

Kevin urged individuals not to underestimate the potential of a science degree, emphasizing that it's not confined to traditional science roles. Instead, he encouraged them to explore the various paths and possibilities it offers.

Consider Teaching Certification

While discussing his transition to teaching, Kevin underscored the value of obtaining teaching certification or training alongside a science degree. Drawing from his experience, he recognized the importance of formal education in pedagogy and classroom management.

Kevin advised individuals to consider pursuing teaching certification or relevant training programs to enhance their teaching skills and job prospects. He believed that this additional credential could better prepare them for a successful career in education.

Don't Underestimate Teaching

Despite the misconceptions surrounding teaching, Kevin passionately defended its merits. He spoke of the intrinsic rewards of making a difference in student's lives and the satisfaction of helping them reach their full potential.

Kevin emphasized that teaching isn't just a job—it's a vocation that offers unique benefits, such as extended vacation periods and opportunities for travel. He urged individuals not to underestimate the value and impact of a career in teaching, emphasizing its potential for personal fulfilment and professional growth.

According to Kevin, you will find a few other careers that let you have a summer vacation.

Plan for Professional Development
