From rural Trelawny to Aberdeen, Scotland, Kevhvan Graham, a 2023 Chevening Scholar describes his story as a testament to the power of ambition, mentorship, and the unshakeable belief in oneself and God.

A Humble Beginning

Graham's story begins in Trelawny, where he was one of only two students from his primary school to pass for DeCarteret College.

He openly admits that choosing DeCarteret College was an arbitrary decision. "I didn't know that school existed. I just picked it because somebody said I should pick it."

With that choice, he embarked on a seven-year journey through high school at DeCarteret College. However, this path was not without its challenges. "I had a very humbling beginning," he reflects. Growing up as the youngest of four in a close-knit family, he faced financial hardships, making the daily commute from Trelawny to Mandeville for his education a daunting task.

"There were times I missed school," he admits. "I had to explain to them that there are times when I don't have lunch money to come to school or bus fare."

However, his induction into the Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH) played a crucial role in ensuring he could continue his education. PATH is a social welfare programme, which provides conditional cash grants to vulnerable households within the Jamaican population.

Graham's personality is a mix of introversion and extroverted tendencies. He shares, "I'm pretty much an introvert, but I do have extroverted tendencies." His interests include reading, playing music, singing, and outdoor activities such as beach trips, park visits, and hiking.

His high school years saw him predominantly focusing on academics, with participation in science-related clubs, and his high school choir, which led him to participate in TVJ’s All Together Sing, a Jamaican high school choir competition. Graham recounts being a part of the choir as an enriching experience and exposure, having placed in 2009 and 2011, and first in 2013.

A Love for Science and Unyielding Faith

Graham's affinity for science began early in his life. He recalls that, even in fourth grade, his science textbook was his favourite, owing to his visual learning style. The illustrations and diagrams resonated with him, allowing him to connect classroom knowledge to real-life observations. This passion for science was a driving force that led him to pursue a career in scientific research.

Raised in a spiritually inclined household, he was an active participant in the church, holding the position of an usher. His spiritual beliefs and strong faith in God have provided him with guidance and strength during difficult times, such as when he encountered academic challenges in his younger years.

A simple prayer, inspired by observing his mother's devotion, led to remarkable improvements in his academic performance, reinforcing his faith in the power of belief and persistence.

University and Beyond

Upon completing his secondary education at DeCarteret College, Graham contemplated his future. He recognized the limited opportunities in his small hometown and sought the next step in his academic journey.

His determination led him to take out a student loan and pursue higher education. This led him to the University of the West Indies (UWI), where he embarked on a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology.

He points out that his dedication to education transcended mere classroom learning, as he actively engaged in extracurricular activities and volunteered for various initiatives, such as beach cleanups and high school visits.

His unwavering commitment to his goals eventually paid off. Graham earned his Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and forged ahead to complete his Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Molecular Biology right away.

His academic path was enriched by the support of mentors like Michael Roofe, senior lecturer of Accounting at UWI, who not only guided him professionally but also provided crucial emotional support during challenging times.

The transition to postgraduate studies was a significant turning point. After undertaking a MPhil from 2017 to 2022-23, this phase was marked by working as a lab demonstrator, interruptions by COVID-19, various interactions with students and a clash of priorities with his supervisor.

A Chevening Scholar's Journey

Receiving the Chevening Scholarship represents a significant milestone in Graham's life. This prestigious scholarship, offered to outstanding individuals from around the world, provides them with the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom. The scholarship encompasses both academic excellence and the potential for leadership and influence on a global scale.

He notes that this is his biggest accomplishment to date. His second was being awarded the best overall orator presenter at the Ministry of Health and Wellness National Health Research Conference in 2020.

Despite not achieving his dream of a first-class honour during his undergraduate grades and financial setbacks, his dedication to volunteerism and humanitarian efforts, even during his studies, set him apart during the selection process.

A Vision for the Future

As a Chevening Scholar, Kevin has a clear vision for the future. He intends to return to Jamaica after completing his studies in the UK and contribute significantly to the healthcare sector.

Firstly, to revisit infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols within healthcare centres. Graham mentions his desire to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of these protocols, particularly to prevent infections in vulnerable patients. He aims to enhance healthcare practices and create a safer environment for all.

Secondly, to raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). He underscores that the issue is of critical importance as it affects the efficacy of antibiotics in treating infections. By educating professionals and the public on the responsible use of antibiotics, Graham hopes to combat AMR and safeguard public health.

Beyond his professional goals, Graham remains committed to volunteer work and community engagement. He views his work as an opportunity to inspire other young people to pursue their dreams and overcome challenges.

Graham is driven by the belief that anyone can achieve success with hard work, dedication, and the right support system. When asked what advice he would give young people particularly young men of today’s generation, he replied simply, “Focus on your goals, find something you're passionate about, and just believe in yourself.”
